Bhutan is an emerging destination for adventurous travelers. With a rich cultural history steeped in Buddhism and a society that bases it’s lifestyle on Gross National Happiness, it is on the edge of major change as they allow more foreign travelers into this Kingdom in the Himalayas.
Beth was captivated by this tiny country nestled between Tibet and India on her first journey to Bhutan. As a result, she will be leading two trips there in 2009 and organizing a photography trip with professional photographer Brenda Tharp.

India
A rich panoply of culture and land through time

India is a vast and splendid land. Veteran travel guide, historian and filmmaker Adrian Chalker offers travelers a helping hand steering a path through India's spectacular labyrinth of sights and mysteries to bring out the wonders of the sub-continent. From the battlements of Agra's Red Fort, Rajasthan's opulent palaces and the Taj Mahal in the north, to the soaring Gopuram architecture, tropical Malabar backwaters and plantations of the Spice Hills in the south, India remains the 'great frontier' for those travelers that seek a land where magic is still real. Adrian will present opportunities to stay in Maharaja's palaces, home-stay on a Cardamom Spice Plantation, ride elephants and seek tigers in the southern jungles and across the spectacular landscape of Rajasthan. We cover Mysore, Ooty and Madras, explore Jaipur, Udaipur, Varanasi and Khajuraho, and visit Bangalore, Trichy, Madurai, Delhi and Cochin. To quote Paul William Roberts, India is the "empire of the soul.”

The Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan
Bhutan is the last of the small, hidden Himalayan kingdoms to unlock the doors to its’ mysteries. The Land of the Thunder Dragon, as its original name implies, has maintained its integrity and independence throughout the centuries, repelling invasions from the strongholds of its fortified monasteries, or dzongs. The first foreign tourists came in 1972 and the number allowed to visit each year is very limited. Bhutan is almost entirely mountainous, with the land rising from 600 feet above sea level in the south to the over 23,000 foot snow covered peaks in the north. The flora and fauna of Bhutan represents some of the most pristine Himalayan ecology remaining; brilliantly colored birds and butterflies are everywhere, and mountain slopes are covered with tree-size rhododendrons and endless species of flowers, many of the rarest in the Himalayas. Join Christine Mackay, founder of the local non-profit tourism organization Crooked Trails. Crooked Trail offers programs to improve the cultural, ecological and economic conditions around the world by changing the way people travel.

Global Support with a Mission--Go the Second Mile
Come get a taste of what it means to travel in cultures far removed from your own where we learn the value of walking softly and do no harm. Where the emphasis for our Volunteer Travel is to experience the people and the culture of our hosts as their guests yet working along side them to offer a helping hand. See what we do in a remote historically Tibetan village of Yunnan Province, China, high in the Himalayas. Visit with us to a Rwandan village of genocide survivors of widows and orphans as they seek to develop a trade to support themselves. Find great camaraderie among the Batwa students of Burundi as we support their learning experience with English or soccer or basketball or computer skills or agriculture/gardening—whatever they need. Visit with us in the Philippines where we’ll labor at an orphanage that is now a safe haven for kids previously found surviving on the streets. Take a short trip to Acuna, Mexico, just across the Texas border in the poorest Colonia in Acuna where we are helping to make a donation based school a viable alternative to the violence and drug culture that currently exists. Work and laugh along side the world’s poor as we partner with them to bring meaningful change to their lives.

Planning a Tanzanian Safari
Dreaming of a Tanzanian safari?
There is much to consider.
 Where should you go? Tanzania has northern, southern and western safari circuits.  How do you get off the beaten path? There are opportunities to get away from it all even on the popular northern circuit, if you know how.  When should you go? Wildlife patterns are related to weather.  Are you interested in a wildlife safari or one which balances wildlife and culture? Visitors often report the people they meet as a highlight of their safaris.  Safaris mean long hours in a vehicle: Would you prefer active safaris which incorporate days of easy walking or days of adventurous trekking?  What are the best lodges?  What is camping all about and is it safe?  What are the best vehicles for game viewing?  What kind of vaccinations do you need?  What should it cost?  How can solo travelers go on safari? “Planning a Tanzanian safari” addresses these questions and more. With all the information to sort through and safari operators from which to choose, it helps to have informed advice from a former resident of Tanzania who has made over 110 safaris into the national parks and game reserves.

Bio: Leslie Nevison has called seven countries home—Turkey, the Sultanate of Oman, Singapore (twice), Tanzania, Uzbekistan, Greece, and the Republic of Congo. She has traveled through another thirty countries and written over forty travel articles for publication. In 2005, she started Mama Tembo Tours, Tanzanian wildlife and cultural safaris which she designs and often leads herself.

Gorilla & Walking Safaries in Africa
Leslie Nevison of Mama Tembo Tours Inc will discuss and show videos of four unique African tours she offers to Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia and Central Africa.
Western Lowland Gorilla Safaris
Nouabale-Ndoki and Dzanga-Ndoki National Parks in the Republic of Congo and the Central African Republic offer travelers the opportunities to observe the only two habituated groups of western lowland gorillas in the world as well as Africa's highest densities of forest elephants. To visit these parks is adventure at its best and a unique wildlife experience. Only a few operators work in Congo. Leslie, who has lived in the Rep of Congo, is one of them.
Africa's Longest Walking Safari
A foot safari in big game country is the most exciting and challenging way to experience Africa. The continent's longest walking safari is a 12-day, 100-mile trek across Kenya's Tsavo National Parks National Parks, big game country the whole way. Over ten years ago, Kenyan host Iain accompanied writer and mountaineer Rick Ridgeway from the summit of Mt Kilimanjaro to the Indian Ocean, a foot safari described in Ridgeway's book The Shadow of Kilimanjaro and from which this shorter walk has been adapted.
Yaeda Valley, Tanzania
Home to remaining numbers of a hunter and gatherer tribe whose survival is tenuous, the Hadza, and a pastoralist people known as the Datoga, Yaeda is a remote cultural destination in Northern Tanzania for those seeking something different in safari travel.
North and South Luangwa National Parks, Zambia
Another great choice for a wildlife safari which incorporates walking and remote bush camps away from busy safari circuits. Afterwards, fit in a visit to Victoria Falls.

Legendary Treasures of Jordan
Jordan has been a popular travel destination for more than 10,000 years! The Nabeatean civilizations once carved their dwellings into its red-rock stone cliffs, Greco-Roman cities lace the by-ways and Biblical sites abound in the countryside. The salt-enriched powers of the Dead Sea still call to tourists and travelers alike. As part of the Cradle of civilization, T. E. Lawrence, famously described the region as "vast, echoing and God-like." Don’t miss one of the most stunning desertscapes in the world! Slide presentation by Emily Wilson.
